2014 Design Summit

Monroe – The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey, New Jersey Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Association jointly sponsored the 2014 Design Summit on May 21, 2014.  The Design Summit involved four presentations in different subject areas by representatives of engineering firms, NJDOT and FHWA staff. Topics were Pavement Technology, Accelerated Bridge Construction, Project Funding and Transportation Management Plans.  The presentation is available for download below.

The Pavement Technology panel discussed pavement management technologies, preservation, rehabilitation and reconstruction procedures used within NJDOT. New innovative technologies within the pavement industry were presented by a pavement rehabilitation case study using cold in-place foamed asphalt recycling.

The Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) presentation described the primary reasons for using ABC, explained the various types of ABC technologies and discussed when to apply them.  Recent examples and lessons learned from state projects were provided along with the national perspective and data on national ABC activities.

The Project Funding panel provided a general understanding of Federal Funds, State Transportation Funds and how they are programmed to best deliver transportation and infrastructure improvements in New Jersey.  The Department’s programming process, Capital Investment Strategies and MAP-21 were addressed.

The Transportation Management Plan panel presented traffic management related information and a case study.  Transportation Management Plan (TMP) is required for all federal-aid highway projects since October 2007. TMPs lay out a set of strategies at the corridor and network levels and provide a more comprehensive approach to managing work zone impacts beyond traffic control and safety. The three components of a TMP are: Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Plan, Traffic Operations (TO) Plan and Public Information and Outreach (PIO) Plan, tailored to the complexity of a project.

The inspirational Dr. Steve Sobel gave a keynote presentation entitled “You’re A Piece of Work! Celebrate Joy, Passion and Influence”.   Dr. Sobel’s uplifting presentation taught the value bringing all of your capabilities to your company, team and enterprise each day.  Communicating for excellence, coordinating projects and challenges while staying "positive", and maintaining your senses of humor were highlighted in an engaging and memorable presentation.

The Design Summit focuses on strengthening the communication, coordination and cooperation among FHWA, NJDOT and the engineering consultant community. The all-day event featured panels that were requested by 2013 Design Summit attendees. Professional engineers earned continuing education credits in both New Jersey and New York.
